The country style: a classic with a modern twist
Cosy and rustic flair for restaurants and hotels
What is country style?
There is no single country style – the term “country house” encompasses the simpler, rural styles of different countries and regions. Country style is therefore based on the traditional furnishings of farmhouses in different areas:
- Country style based on models from southern Germany, Austria, Switzerland and South Tyrol: checked patterns, dark wood, Alpine romanticism
- French country style with elements from central or southern France: romantic and playful
- Italian country style, inspired by Tuscany and Veneto: terracotta, heavy wooden furniture and tiled floors
- British country house style based on cottages in southern England: turned farmhouse furniture, decorations with floral or checked patterns
- American country house style: rustic, inspired by the ‘Wild West’
- Scandinavian country house style: minimalist and linear, light colours and lots of white
A modern interpretation of country style
If you want to furnish your guest room or hotel in country style, you don't have to resort to the classic style of Bavarian taverns, because country style can be interpreted in many different ways and also implemented in a modern way. The important thing is to focus on down-to-earthness. Whereas heavy, dark wooden furniture and classic floral or checked tablecloths used to define the country house style, the modern version focuses on natural furniture made of light wood, often with a visible structure, as well as simple shapes and decorations. The popular vintage look and shabby chic can also be integrated very well into the country house theme.
Which materials and colours are suitable for the modern country house style?
The country house style is the exact opposite of our hectic and ever-changing world: it focuses on cosiness and down-to-earthness. That's why natural colours and materials are particularly suitable for implementing the country house style, as they create an authentic atmosphere in which guests can relax and recover from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The colour scheme is therefore based on nature: brown tones, earth colours, beige, off-white and green are perfect, but grey and pastel shades also suit the country house style. These colours can be used not only on the walls and furniture, but also on textiles such as tablecloths, runners, napkins and decorative cushions. In hotel rooms, bed linen, towels, seating and cushions in country house colours complete the look. When it comes to materials, the country house style draws on nature and focuses on natural solid wood, ceramics and stone. Cotton and linen are particularly suitable for textiles, but faux fur and leather also create an authentic atmosphere.
